North Island Travel

Yesterday, after my dad finished running at the Natural Energy Lab, we went on a self guided tour of the North half of the island. By self guided I mean no maps, just follow where the road may take us. We ended up making our way over to the East side of the island and we got lost in a town by the name of Hilo. But, it was really pretty there and we were able to see the King Kamehameha statue, and they had some really cool trees. We had a fun ride on Saddle Road, which is the road between Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa. It wasn't really like a road as much as it was like a roller coaster ride! As we drove on the road we had to be sure to look out for wild pigs and Nene (Hawaiian Goose). We returned to Kona exhausted.

I can't believe the number of different ecosystems that Hawai'i has. During our travel we saw lava fields and rainforests. We also saw other places that reminded me of places such as South Dakota, Wyoming, California, and Western Nebraska. There were so many trees on the eastern side of the island. We went and saw the Botanical gardens near Umauma falls. It was so pretty. We saw so many different types of flowers and plam trees. We are now covered in mosquito bites. We also adventured to Akaka falls.

I have posted pictures of the King Kamehameha statue in Hilo and Akaka falls. We went to Umauma falls but the picture of it is on my parents camera.

If you would like to see a little bit of Hawai'i for yourself check out this website, it is from the "Island Lava Java Cafe." Who knows! You may even see us sitting there one time!:

Hi Tanzi, this is Bill, Carol's husband. We stayed a week on "The Big Island" a few years ago and probably did the same tour that you did. We drove the road the goes completely around the island. Hilo is different, but we did have maps.

We stayed at a time share in Kona and snorkled a lot. I came away with a lot of scratches from the coral.

I enjoyed reading your blog. Your grandmother sent us the web address.

Hi Bill. It's nice to hear from you. The island is so beautiful, I can't get over it! We were laughing so hard trying to figure out how to say most of the street names. I'm glad that you like it.
