Arriving in Kona

Aloha!

After technical difficulties we finally made it to Kona. We got on the plane and fastened our seatbelts. The pilots ran pre-flight tests and announced they had good news and bad news. The good news was we were all going to Kona. The bad news was that it wasn't going to be on that plane. Apparently there was an issue with the door. So, we all had to get off the plane and wait another hour and a half and then get onto another plane! They had to switch all of the luggage and everything.

The airport in Kona is of the open air variety. It looks like a bunch of Polynesian huts. The airstrip is in the middle of a lava field. It's very warm here, like a summer day in Nebraska but without the humidity.

This morning is the first day of my dad's training in the ocean. He will be swimming with people from South Africa, Germany, the United States, and Australia. After that he will be going on a 2 hour bike ride down the Queen K. (The main highway up the coast) We enjoyed hanging out at Island Lava Java while he swam. His description of the swim was that it was exactly like snorkeling. The fish that he saw were amazing.

I included a picture of the lava fields from the air and the view from our condo.
